Blog 6 - Project Reflection

I signed up for the Customer Insights course because I wanted to learn the concepts and tools that would help me gain deeper insights into customers’ behaviors and needs. I wanted to better understand them and use this to make decisions to design innovative products and market to them. I believe that understanding the customer and centering design on their needs is the best way to create value for them. After taking the class and working on our group projects, I believe one of the concepts that I learned and understand better is customer empathy. Writing the persona assignment and really thinking of how a particular person feels, sees, hears, thinks, says and does, as well as understanding their pains and gains, was useful to really picture what this person is like. Instead of using the typical segmentation strategy and trying to market to a larger group, designing a product specifically to fit their needs, it can then be extrapolated to fit the group they belong to.

The prototyping sessions were also useful. Playing around and trying to come up with ideas as a group and then building a physical model of the idea was entertaining and helped boost our creativity. One of the best days was the when we did the exercise of taking the two post-it with different information and trying to connect the dots to come up with quick ideas. I think this would be a great exercise to use in an organization where the different trends in the industry require the company to come up with new products that create value for the customers. When we were thinking about the product we would propose for the team project, we used the knowledge gained by understanding the family with older children and the technological trends we know about the smartphone, tablet and laptop market, and determined the best solution for them. Although this product is not necessarily the panacea for the family and there are more details that need to be determined, it would create a lot of value for the family. We have researched about Samsung’s technology and it is very close to what is needed to develop this product. We are very sure that this product or something very similar be in the market in the short term.

Particularly, I like working on these types of projects. It gives me an opportunity to work with a diverse group of people with very different backgrounds and interesting ideas. Still, one of the things that I think could have been better is if the project wouldn’t have been restricted to Samsung products. The company really didn’t add value throughout the process and focusing on having to share our results with the company makes me feel like we are working hard in our class and giving away our ideas for free. I believe that if we would’ve had the opportunity to work on any type of product we would have been able to generate a wider variety of even more diverse and creative products. Part of the frustration also comes from having to create a recording for them, since we did not have the expertise or tools to do so. I would have rather used our general knowledge to design a professional presentation for the class.

I enjoyed working on the project with my team and I particularly liked visiting the Mazac family. As a Mexican, I don’t really know how an American family lives. I know very few families with young children in the United States so walking into their home, speaking to them, and looking at how they live and the technology they use was very surprising. This was an eye-opener of the importance of doing an extra effort to learn about the family. If you would’ve have ask me, I would have expected something very different and would have come up with very different ideas for products, probably directed to other people. As for the class, I would have liked to learn more about the methods and tools we can use. I would suggest including some cases for the class, where we can see how some companies have used or not used customer insights to design their products and how they have been successful or failed in their endeavors. Instead of just talking about a subject, we can discuss about the cases and people can give their opinions and relate class teachings on what the company could have done better. Although this would be more work, reducing the amount of blogs and maybe even the final paper could make room for this. I do think that working with my teammates contributed to my learning. I also appreciate the professor’s availability to speak with us and clarify our project’s expectations.

Blog 4 - Creativity

I believe creativity can come through different forms. Personally, I experience creativity though art, when I draw or write music, through brainstorming, coming up with ideas for businesses and products, or identifying better ways of doing things and solving problems. I consider myself as a creative person, but when I force myself to think of something or try to come up with something in particular, I feel that my mind blocks out and shuts down. I believe that several things can influence a person’s creative ability such as mood, state of mind and the surrounding environment, and in order to best stimulate and enhance creativity all these aspects should be aligned.

Although some of one’s usual work is individual, most of the time we will get to work in teams and try to come up with the best solutions and alternatives to resolve the given situations. Sometimes it is not only about creating something tangible, but it can be also about introducing a creative thinking process or a leadership process. Most of the time people get to work in teams, so it is very important to know how to communicate, listen to people and try to develop creative ways to motivate and influence people.

There have been times when I have felt especially creative and I find this has always been when I am in a state of happiness and relaxation, sadness and need or simply heavy stress. I consider myself an extrovert and like to express myself; nevertheless it is sometimes difficult to find the media. The need to express and the need to satisfy is typically what drives me to feed my creativeness.

After I graduate in May from my MBA studies, I will become a consultant. I have always liked to learn new things and in business, learn about new industries and different areas. Every time I have changed my job position, I learn about the current procedures, understand the processes and requirements and then try to find better ways of doing things. For this I am required to optimize my own and my team’s creativeness.

I sometimes have trouble coming up with new ideas and find it complicated to create things from scratch. Nonetheless, I feel that when we learn new information and we associated with it with a need or a trend; we are able to connect the dots and sprout out new ideas. I especially get inspired and like to apply things I read in books or magazines. For example, before I started my MBA at McCombs, I worked at a carpet manufacturer in Monterrey, Mexico. I read an article from Harvard Business Review that said that employees are happier when they give away or donate part of their salary or bonus.  I set out to start a charitable association that invited all of the company’s employees to participate in helping the poor in Mexico.

The culture of the company where you work has a lot to do whether there is a creative environment or not. There have to be the correct incentives ant he correct motivations for people to take the risks to propose some new ideas. Most of the time, professionals are too busy allocating time in their daily tasks to find time to be creative. A company that wishes employees to be creative needs to provide the time, the environment and the resources for employees to go through their thinking process. When employees are rewarded for new and creative ideas they come up with, the company will strive with creativity. Nevertheless, an employee who works with repetitive work and who has to follow directions will not be concerned with implementing creativity to improve their work.
I do believe I am capable of being creative by myself, especially for several types of activities. Sometimes, it is necessary to think by yourself, quietly and come up with ideas that resolve an issue. This can lead to great things that can also be improved through research, advocacy, implementation and feedback. Sometimes, it is necessary to brainstorm with a group of people, hear the different view points and identify the best solutions that are the product of several people’s given experiences. I believe a group can sometimes be more creative than an individual. Most people are curious and like to criticize what they feel can be improved. Each of these thinking processes is different and the group can be capable of creating something highly valuable, if organization and coordination is provided.

The author of this article makes a good point when he says that creativity is not something we inherit, but a skill we can learn and develop. He says that creativity is something we can improve and become better at in our work and in our lives. I do believe this is true, but I also believe that some people are better than others. As I can work and practice intensely to improve my tennis skills, a professional tennis player was born with special skills and characteristics that provide the capabilities to as good in the sport as he is. As I can probably improve and play decent tennis, I can also come up with good and creative ideas at work, nevertheless I can be sure that I will never be as good as Roger Federer in tennis, and most likely not be as creative as Steve Jobs or Bob Dylan.

The Battle of the Games & the Next Generation Customer

Our generation has witnessed the video game market since its earliest stages and has watched it grow as the different competitors in this multibillion dollar industry introduce different technologies and consoles that revolutionize not only the way people play, but also the way people interact and socialize. Besides having owned six different consoles throughout my life and still being an active player, I have always found this topic very interesting. This is an industry in which competitors have come and gone, and like the battle between VHS and Beta or HD DVD and Blu-ray, the survivors have not always been those that offer the best technology, but those who understand the customers and understand how best to market to them.

In 1971, Magnavox and Atari introduced the first very simple video game consoles that could be connected to the TV. In 1976, Fairchild released the VES, the first cartridge-based console, and RCA and Atari followed shortly after. Nevertheless, in 1977 Fairchild and RCA abandoned their game consoles, leaving only Atari and Magnavox in the market. Many other companies launched their own consoles, but Atari dominated the market until the early 1980s, until the video game market crash in 1983.
It was until 1985 when Nintendo revived the video console market by introducing its NES console, with a great hit with the Super Mario Bros game. This was followed by the release of several consoles, such as the Sega Genesis in 1989, which had great success with the Sonic the Hedge Hog game, and the Super Nintendo Entertainment System. Other better consoles tried to enter the market, such as the 3DO, the Atari Jaguar, and Apple Macintosh’s Apple Bandai Pippin, but they did poorly either because they were too expensive, it was complicated to program for, or they were not accepted by the customers.
Consoles became more powerful, and the strong competition required companies to update them every few years. In 1995, Sega released the Sega Saturn and Sony the first PlayStation, while Nintendo followed with the Nintendo 64 in 1996. In 1998, Sega introduced the Dreamcast and in 2000 came the PlayStation 2, which was again very successful. In 2001 Nintendo came up with the Nintendo GameCube and Microsoft joined the competition with the Xbox, which was the first console to have a hard drive to save games and Ethernet for high speed online gaming through Xbox Live.
Next came the Xbox 360 in 2005 and in 2006, only one year later, came the PlayStation 3, with its PlayStation Network for online gaming, and the Nintendo Wii. The first two had DVD readers, hard drives and high definition graphics, while the later one did not. Nevertheless, it included motion tracking, which was shortly added to the Xbox 360 through the Kinect and to the PlayStation 3 through the PlayStation Move.
This history shows us the importance to the gathering and identification of customer insights, the design of valuable customer experiences, and the design thinking process. We know that companies can differentiate their consoles with price and technology, such as power, speed, graphics, motion, memory, compatibility and connectivity, but it is important to understand what really makes the difference to the customer when deciding between the different options.
The rivalry is stronger than ever, and as these companies fight to introduce their next products, they have to be careful from hackers and security breaches. Not only do they have to win their customers with their products, but they also have to maintain their confidence and trust. These companies have millions of players connected to a network and all their information, so a security breach can cause a lot of damage to their future performance.  For example, Microsoft recently was attacked by a hacker and Sony suffered a hack in 2011, releasing personal information of its customers, costing the company $170 million dollars and hurting their reputation. (Article 1)
After the fast evolution in gaming technology, six years have passed since the last consoles were introduced to the market. Gamers are very excited about the next technology and everybody wants to know who will win the next battle between the big three. The Playstation 4 was announced on February 20, 2012 and is expected to be released around Christmas. (Article 2) There are also rumors that Microsoft will introduce the Xbox 720 in time for Christmas, but the question is, which one will come out first and which one will wait. (Article 3) It is said that Sony usually waits to be second, since it fears competitors might copy their specs and release a better console. This might be possible, but I believe there is more to it than just the technology.
I believe it is important for companies to understand their different customers, how they live, how they play and what they value. Obviously, customers are segmented by different demographics, but in particular, who a person plays with strongly influences the next console they will purchase. Social gaming increases switching costs for customers and creates loyalty within groups, since friends will have the same type of console and will persuade others to buy it. When introducing a new generation of consoles, retaining their current users is a challenge, but understanding how to get complete groups of friends to switch, from the competitors’ to theirs, is a greater one.

Generative Research Design

Generative Research Design

The things that I can’t live without are my wife, my family, my health, my friends and of course peace and happiness, which I represent by a picture of my wife in the sunset. These are the things that I need in my life and the things I consider difficult for me to live without. It is obvious that the people in my life will not be with me forever, but the memories and learnings I get from them will stay with me. Nevertheless, if I lose my health, my peace and my happiness, I will no longer be able to live as I am today.

The things that are important to me are my religion and beliefs, my country, my work, exercising, increasing knowledge and having fun, which I represented by a picture of me skiing and playing golf. All these things are a very important in my daily life and they complement and allow me to keep the things I cannot live without.

I usually get my news from national magazines and newspapers, as well as from my hometown’s local newspaper. To read the information, I look at them online through my computer, but mostly through apps in my iphone. I have several apps where I can read the news, such as CNN, Bloomberg, The Economist, Forbes and The New York Times. A very useful app that consolidates all the information is Flipboard. With this app, I can select all the sources I want to look at and in the cover page, I can read the day's most important and updated news out of each one of them.

Persona & Empathy Map

Cristina Garcia is a 24 year old Mexican woman living in the United States. She is bright, well educated and comes from a conservative family. She has been married for the past two years to Carlos, a Mexican working professional with whom she is very much in love with. Cristina is very supportive of her husband’s goals and ambitions, since she understands that working in the United States is a great opportunity that will boost his career. They are thinking of starting a family in the short-term and, although she misses home, her family and friends, she understands this sacrifice will allow them to improve their situation and provide better opportunities for the whole family. Unfortunately she does not have a work Visa, but she works remotely part-time for a Mexican company and aspires to continue developing professionally.

Cristina lives in a friendly, healthy and safe environment. She has been able to make great friends, with whom she meets on most days to chat, get some coffee or play some card games. Since she lives downtown, she walks to most places, and she drives her personal car everywhere else. She and her husband like to go out and have fun on the weekends. They usually go to bars, and she typically orders a long island ice tea or a screwdriver. They go to the movies, which is always complicated, since she likes romance movies and Carlos really likes action films. Sometimes they go out to dinner, since both enjoy a good meal with a glass of red wine. They enjoy each other’s company but they also like getting together with their friends.

Besides her spending half her day working online on her Mac computer, she fills her days with interesting activities. She purchases the weekly groceries and does the cooking, washing and cleaning in their small apartment. She doesn’t like to get her hands dirty and gets really tired after a day filled with chores, but she likes keeps everything clean and in order. She likes to buy healthy food, although she loves chips and sweets. Additionally, she takes weekly tennis lessons, goes to the gym and occasionally plays golf. She is occupied most of the day, but she also finds time to relax, hang out and watch TV. She especially likes to watch all types of sports channels and will never miss a tennis tournament.

Cristina is an outgoing woman, and she has no problem starting up a conversation with new people. She is well articulated and traveled, and maintains aware of world news and events, which help have interesting conversations. Her friends trust her and like spending time with her. The ones in Mexico are very affectionate every time she visits and miss her every time she leaves. Her friends are also starting their families, so she likes to talk on the phone and Skype occasionally, to keep in touch and know what is going on with their lives. When she visits, she tries to see them as much as possible, and they have visited her as well. She is a good host and even purchased a really comfortable inflatable bed for when they visit.

Cristina is an attractive woman who likes to dress nice and takes care of her appearance. She likes buying good clothing and likes to carry a nice purse, but not necessarily always expensive brands. She always keeps her makeup in her purse and makes sure she is wearing enough lipstick. For this and all her other things, she usually carries a large purse, unless she is really dressed up. She has many shoes, of different colors and styles, and between her dress and sports shoes, she fills up most of her closet.

She likes helping people and has a good attitude towards life and others. She does well with her work and her boss lets her work without interfering much, because he knows she is responsible, loyal and hardworking. Although she is easy to get along with, she has a strong character, argues strongly in what she believes in and looks for what is just and right. She hates when people don’t do their job and would never allow anybody talking to her in a disrespectful manner.

Even though she lives a happy life, Cristina has her troubles and worries. She misses her family and likes to visit Mexico as often as possible, because she fears she will lose the relationships she’s built throughout her life. This can get complicated, since airplane tickets are very expensive and driving over the Mexican border is currently pretty dangerous. Also, she feels lonely when Carlos travels for work and hates being alone. She knows it’s something he needs to do, but gets frustrated every time he leaves. Her main fear is the uncertainty for the future, because she knows raising a family is expensive, and she wants to give her children the best opportunities.

She hopes that one day she can go back to live in Mexico. She wants her children to grow up where she did, live surrounded by the Mexican culture and get the right education to prepare for their future. She knows there will be obstacles, but the future will depend on her husband’s career opportunities. Most of all, she wants to have a long and happy life with Carlos. She hopes to be healthy and enjoy her life with her family. She wants a nice house and would like to take several fun and memorable trips with her family. She wants to be a good wife and a good mother, and hopes to have a loving and lasting marriage with her husband.
